More than half of autism child has other condition other than autism condition, therefore children who diagnosed with autism should also get further assessment to see whether they have any other comorbidities or not. Some of the comorbidities can be quite dangerous as it cause higher death rate. The following are some of the common condition that accompanies autism.
-Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition that has some developmental issue like learning disabilities and cognitive delay. Some of them might have physical features such as long face, large ear, flat feet, unusually flexible finger, low muscle tone, enlarged testicle after puberty for male. They might have a range of mild to severe intellectual disabilities, attention deficit and hyperactive (ADHD), anxiety, sensory integration problem, speech delay and epilepsy or seizure.
-Tuberous sclerosis is a genetic condition that causes tumor to grow in different organ, such as brain, skin, eye, lung, heart and kidney. This condition causes seizure, developmental delay, intellectual disabilities, autism and skin abnormalities.
-Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that can cause abnormality in brain activity such as seizure. The symptoms of seizure are varying among individual and according to types of seizure. Two main seizures are partial and generalized. Partial seizure is resulting from abnormality in one part of brain, two types of partial seizure are simple partial seizure and complex partial seizure. Symptoms of simple partial seizure are arm and leg stiff, sudden change of mood, difficulty in speaking, déjà vu, sensory hallucination, this type of seizure does not cause loss of consciousness. Symptoms of complex partial seizure are stare into space, perform repetitive movement, and this type of seizure may cause loss of consciousness. Generalized seizure involved all area of brain and there are 6 types of generalized seizure. Tonic seizure which cause muscle stiffness; clonic seizure which cause jerking movement; tonic-clonic seizure which may cause the patient to bite their tongue, loss of bowel control and loss of consciousness; atonic seizure which cause sudden collapse and loss of consciousness; myoclonic seizure which involve sudden rapid jerk on body part; absence seizure which cause stare off into space and become non-responsive to the environment.
-Gastrointestinal problems which include constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gastroesophagael reflux and bowel inflammation. Autism children tends to have more gastrointestinal problem than typical children.
-Sleep problem which include night waking and irregular pattern on sleeping and waking.
Mental health condition
-Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the symptoms are difficulty in paying attention and following instruction, struggle in sitting still and wait for turn. There are 3 types of ADHD, inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive. Children with ADHD may have all or only one of the types. Inattentive refer to children who are easily distracted and find it very difficult to concentrate and focus on task, daydreaming and absent-minded. Hyperactive refer to children who are easily get bored and restless, difficulty in sitting still, climbing and jumping in inappropriately. Impulsive refer to children who are often interrupt, difficult in waiting, act before thinking, do thing without asking for permission.
-Anxiety will affect a person psychologically and physically as well, the symptoms are including difficulty in sleeping, depression, lose patience easily, pessimistic, frequent urinating, loose bowel movement, stomach upset, headache, dizziness and excessive thirst. If anxiety in autism left untreated, it may lead to aggression and self-injury in autistic child.
